Our journey so far!
The beginning
In late 2015, starting from humble beginnings in his bedroom in Perth, WA, Dale Foster founded Electrical Estimating Solutions, an electrical estimating business. Around the same time, Kannan Rajendiran launched MDC Global, an MEPF design consultancy. At that point, Dale and Kannan had not yet crossed paths.
The meet
In November 2016, Dale and Kannan first met at a Melbourne Cup event, which marked the beginning of their collaboration in the construction industry. Initially, they referred clients to one another and occasionally teamed up on projects, combining their expertise in estimating and design. Over the following years, they continued to focus on growing their respective businesses while maintaining this professional partnership
The purchase
In late 2019, after almost two years of working together, Dale saw an opportunity to acquire a controlling share in MDC Global. His goal was to unite the two businesses, creating a unique offering for the industry by combining design and estimating services while also sharing their respective client bases. This integrated approach would capitalize on the natural synergy between design and estimating, resulting in more efficient, cost-effective solutions.
The pandemic
POST COVID—yes, we made it through! As we emerged from the pandemic, it became clear that our brand was becoming somewhat confusing to our clients. While we offered Estimating & Design services as a package, the two businesses still operated independently. Tired of the external confusion, Dale decided to rebrand the three businesses into one, aiming for simplicity and clarity in the marketplace. He partnered with a branding agency, and after six months, Decobu was born. Originally, Decobu stood for "Design, Cost, Build," and our slogan was "We Design, We Cost, You Build
The goodbye
After establishing Australia’s first and largest outsourced services estimating business, Dale realized that Decobu's unique service offering wasn’t gaining the market traction he had hoped for. At the same time, he discovered a stronger passion for the design aspect of the business. Given his trade background, Dale recognized that his expertise could be better utilized in design to ensure constructability and feasibility aligned with client requirements. In mid-2023, he made the difficult decision to close the estimating division of Decobu, shifting the company’s focus entirely to design and steering it in a new direction.
The future
With a renewed focus and strategic direction, Decobu is now dedicated to expanding its market share in MEPF design services across Australia. With offices in Perth, Sydney, and Manila, we are committed to delivering cost-effective designs, fostering strong communication, and creating a workplace where the entire team can contribute and thrive as part of our collective success.
Why Decobu
