But you don\u2019t need your own\u00a0<strong>water leak detection<\/strong>\u00a0dog because it\u2019s not that difficult to spot leaks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12aac0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"12aac0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Using Your Water Meter<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-01f87cc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"01f87cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The water meter is often the best place to start if you suspect that you have a\u00a0<strong>leak problem<\/strong>\u00a0in your WA home. Here are the steps to follow:<\/p><ol><li>Make sure that all taps are off. Any appliance that uses water should be turned off, as well.<\/li><li>Go to your water meter and look at the numbers. It\u2019s usually found in the front garden near the verge.<\/li><li>Take note of the last three numbers shown on the meter. Remember those three numbers or write them down so you don\u2019t forget their order.<\/li><li>Wait about 15 to 30 minutes. The longer you can wait, the better. But typically, 15 minutes would suffice, especially if you\u2019re in a hurry.<\/li><li>Look at the numbers on the meter again and see if they increased.<\/li><\/ol><p>If the numbers moved, then it\u2019s highly likely that you have a leak. The next step now is to find that leak. You may want to start\u00a0<strong>investigating inside your home<\/strong>. Here are some of the most common spots to watch out for:<\/p><ul><li>Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms are often the most frequent places where leaks occur. Bathrooms, specifically showers, are the biggest water users, making up\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourhome.gov.au\/water#:~:text=Indoors%2C%20the%20shower%20is%20typically,%2C%20toilets%2C%20appliances%20and%20taps.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">34% of water consumption<\/a>. It\u2019s followed by the toilet (26%) and laundry (23%). You could have a broken washing machine, or your dishwasher\u2019s connection is damaged. Wet floors and sinks will tell you that the leak is in any of these areas.<\/li><li>Do you constantly hear the sound of\u00a0<em>water dripping in the kitchen<\/em>? Even if you already found the culprit, you may want to see if there are also problems outside the house. Here are some ways to check the outside of your home for leaks:<\/p><ul><li>Check the sprinklers and other irrigation systems that you use. The outdoor garden is one of the most common areas where leaks occur. So, don\u2019t miss signs like dripping hoses and taps.<\/li><li>Look at other components found in the yard, such as automatic solenoids or manual isolation valves.<\/li><li>Old pipes are a common cause of leaks. Western Australia loses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-02-19\/wa27s-water-loss-in-billions-of-litres-says-ag\/5270660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">about 30 billion litres of water<\/a>\u00a0every year due to ageing pipes. Yours could be among the contributors.<\/li><li>Unstable and damp brick paving tells you there\u2019s a leak to fix.<\/li><li>Specific garden areas appear moist and greener than others. This is another sign of a water leak.<\/li><\/ul><p>Be vigilant if your home has been around for more than 25 years. The plumbing system could be declining, so it should be replaced with a new one.<\/p><p>Once you find the leak, it doesn\u2019t mean that your job is done. Certain problems can be fixed on your own. For example, if solenoid valves are not working, it\u00a0<strong>typically stems from degraded O-rings<\/strong>. Therefore, the best way to repair the issue is to replace them to fix the leak.<\/p><p>A stop tap may also be used, which you can find at the water meter. It\u2019s installed to ensure that water stops flowing in the house. Using the stop tap is essential when carrying out maintenance and repairs.
